Obesity is still a major public health issue in Northern Ireland. The most recent health survey report shows currently almost 2 in 3 people here are classed as being overweight or obese and it is the norm rather than the exception to carry excess weight. This new campaign aims to encourage people to check if they are a healthy weight and if not, to take action to reduce it. This will help reduce their risk of developing serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
The mass media campaign aims to encourage adults who are overweight or obese to think about the portion sizes of the food and drinks they are consuming and to reduce their portion sizes as a way to reduce weight. The key campaign message is: ‘Smaller portions help you reach a healthier weight. It’s still the food you love, just a bit less.’
