Health Surveillance

Health Surveillance is a legal requirement for regular health checks, designed to ensure that worker health is not impacted by their work. The requirement for Health Surveillance is made under The Control of Noise at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006. Even if there are control measures in place there is still a requirement for Health Surveillance for workers regularly exposed to noise levels above 85db at work or if a susceptible individual asks if they are exposed to levels between 80-85db.

The Health Surveillance program should;

  • Ideally take place before people start employment or move to a new role.
  • Be repeated annually at first and then at appropriate intervals of up to 3 years depending on the level of risk.
  • Be under the control of an occupational health professional.

You should use the results of the Health Surveillance to work out if controls are operating effectively and where to focus on improvements. Further guidance is available via the links below;
