Risk Assessment

Health and safety regulations require employers to carry out an assessment of the risks to the health of workers from Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation where they may be exposed.

Where there are five or more employees a written copy of the risk assessment should be provided and employees should always be informed of any significant findings from the assessment process.

Understanding when employees and others may be exposed to risk factors from UV is important when conducting a risk assessment. All potential exposure to UV hazards should be identified as well as who is likely to be exposed, and for how long.

Things to consider for natural UV sources:

  • Environmental Factors – time of day and the season
  • Availability of shade at work and during breaks
  • Are surfaces reflective – surfaces that reflect glare and are smooth are usually higher risk
  • History of sunburn at work

HSENI have provided guidance on how to assess and control the risk from artificial sources of UV radiation Guidance for Employers on the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 (AOR)
