Control Measures

  • Eliminate - Do you really need to use a particular substance, or can you use safer alternative?
  • Changing the process – For example altering the work process to reduce the amount of substance handling
  • Contain the hazard – Enclose the process or activity as much as possible to minimise the escape or release of the harmful substance.
  • LEV – Use a properly designed local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system which extracts dust, fume, mist, gases or vapour through a hood or booth and reduces the exposure of the worker.
  • Systems of work – Restrict access to those people who need to be there. Use appropriate containers and check that they are correctly labelled. Store and dispose of waste safely.
  • Personal protective equipment – If you cannot adequately control exposure by other means, provide personal protective clothing and equipment, in combination with other control measures.
  • Information and training – Do workers understand your risk assessment and what this means for them. Tell them the hazards and risks, workplace exposure limits, and what they need to do to protect themselves including how to use controls and PPE correctly.
  •  Employees should be encouraged to examine their skin for any signs/symptoms/changes and report them
